Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born in Lynn in Massachusetts. She was the daughter of Lithuanian Jewish immigrants Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. The young woman was just a teenager when her father who was a carnival barker died. Her mother had to work in jobs like waitressing, cleaning and washing. Ruth was born in a poor area of Boston Massachusetts where she enrolled in the school. But she only stayed in school for two years before leaving to pursue her acting profession. It was not without challenges. After obtaining a position as a model in New York as a model for a detective magazine she was unable to get opportunities for stage. After that, she was an hat-checker at an evening club, before deciding to call the shots and moving back to Boston. She made ends meet as an usherette throughout the day, and in the evening, she performed with the New England Repertory Company, her first regular acting gig. She received a master's certificate in drama at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
